L1 - Educational Studies in Language and Literature offers an international forum for research and discussion on first-language (L1)/mother-tongue teaching and learning. The journal defines language education as mother-tongue education, the teaching of the standard language or national language education. It deals, for instance, with the common issues of the teaching of French in France and Belgium to francophones, English in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong to anglophones and Spanish in Spain and Argentina to `hispanophones', Catalan in Catalonia. The Journal furthermore deals with L1-education primarily, although very aware of the circumstance that in most learning groups in the world, students are bilingual. Second-language teaching and learning issues will be dealt with in an integrative manner. Divided as we are by our distinct languages and cultures, we share a common concern: the quality of the teaching and learning of language and literature in L1. Throughout the world, education systems face major challenges. Societal demands for literacy and communicative competence increase while at the same time, school populations become ever more culturally and linguistically diverse. In response to these trends, many countries have examples of promising research and development in the learning and teaching of mother-tongue education....in splendid isolation. We argue that national work in the improvement of language education can profit enormously from international exchange. Hence, this journal aims to create an international forum for research and discussion on the teaching and learning of language and literature. L1-education ranges from kindergarten to adult education. It encompasses the learning of the written code and the teaching of oracy. Grammar and communication, literature and functional writing, vocabulary and critical reading: the scope of L1 - Educational Studies in Language and Literature is comprehensive. Within this vast area, L1 - Educational Studies in Language and Literature tries to promote theoretically grounded and empirically informed educational improvement.

Les sociétés actuelles apparaissent comme des espaces pluriels, composites, habitées par une diversité de peuples (Africains, Chinois, Sud Américains, Indiens
). Dans nos grandes cités aujourdhui évoluent des nationalités, des races et des cultures qui nont pas toujours été ensemble. Il sagit de villes à laspect quasi hétéroclite, traversées par des gens dici et dailleurs. Nourries par la différence, ces cités sont devenues de véritables Babels culturels truffés de milles voix(es) que le monde global ne saurait ignorer. La réflexion est souvent faite à propos des diasporas contemporaines qui fonctionnent comme une réorganisation « en exil » de ces peuples bien souvent obligés, pour des raisons politiques, économiques et intellectuels, de chercher un lieu-refuge et douverture hors de leurs limites natales. Peu à peu des véritables liens se sont tissés entre les différentes nationalités qui évoluent dans les grandes capitales du Nord. Nos villes sont devenues des lieux de contact, elles se recréent par le contact, délégitimant du coup le propos raciste et réducteur. Les uvres dart, la littérature ou les productions cinématographiques nés dans ce contexte rendent bien lidée dun brassage et dun métissage. En proposant une prise en compte de ces cultures nées dans lentre-deux, la revue Lianes pense actualiser une démarche entreprise, par dautres médias tout en essayant de pousser plus en avant le questionnement sur le phénomène intéressant de la rencontre. Il sagit de prêter plus dattention aux différences, aux valeurs du Moi et de lAutre en évitant le réflexe tribal, essentialiste. Le but, en effet, sera de fustiger la marginalisation en martelant quon est bien « dans le coup » dune même réalité. Les Lianes expriment un troisième lieu où sentrecroisent les différences. Cest le lieu dynamique dune confrontation qui nourrit le regard et le projet de société. Le travail, lapproche des questions sera théorique mais sintéressera également au terrain. Il est question de varier le propos et cest à travers une diversité de rubriques que Lianes compte toucher le plus large public possible. Nous pensons entres autres rubriques aux articles critiques, interviews, enquêtes, pages culture ou notes de lecture. Le réflexe extrémiste, lenfermement identitaire parce que, peut-être, on a été déçu par la société constitue une menace. Mais on peut (r) ouvrir les chemins du partage. Partager les mots, les expériences.
